Romance and History
The sea glass we find today is a relic from the past. Today, few things are made from glass, and collectors are plentiful. True sea glass takes years for the sand and waves to produce, and each piece is distinct; smoothed and etched by time and tide. The romance of discovering a unique piece and tracing its provenance is what keeps collectors hooked. Sometimes a small piece of glass has a history as interesting as the shard is beautiful.
If you are inclined to search the beach for your own treasures, look for pieces that are etched on both sides and have smooth edges. You can keep them in a water filled bottle or find a gifted jeweler to help you create some sea glass bijoux with your finds.
Twice Tossed
Many pieces of bijoux are made with what is colloquially called "twice tossed" glass instead of real sea glass. These items tend to be coarser and thicker than traditional sea glass, but can be used to create similar pieces. Those that style themselves connoisseurs disdain such items, but it doesn't make them any less beautiful to those who purchase them.
Designing a Piece
When a true artisan designs a piece of bijoux using sea glass, it is a real work of art. It is the combining of disparate elements that takes what are essentially pieces of refuse, silver, and imagination and creates something stunning. Most bijoux will sport glass of white, green, or soft earth tones, as those colors are most common. Rarest of all is red sea glass, so expect to pay appropriately for an item that includes this color.
Since they are working in glass, it is rare for an artisan to actually pierce the "stone." Rather, they wrap it in wire or form an individual cradle for each item they use. Stringing all these parts together into a uniform and attractively balanced whole is where talent of the bijoux making is really shown.
Simplicity in Form
Because each piece of sea glass bijoux is unique, there is little need for the artisan to embellish much. It is the perfect simplicity of sea glass bijoux that is so appealing to those who wear it. There is something amazing about holding these little treasures from the sea.
